Hopes for 2007 12.31.2006 | 2 Comment(s)
These aren't predictions or anything like that, just my hopes for the City in 2007 and some things I'd like to see in the new year.

  1. Focus less attention focused on Downtown development, more focus on neighborhoods.

  2. Interest continues to build in City living.

  3. Marketing efforts for City neighborhoods begin in earnest with a regional and national target audience.

  4. The Board of Aldermen is cut in half.

  5. The St. Louis Public School District fights a state take over and gets its act together.

  6. Control of the STLPD is returned to the City.

  7. City officials finally realize St. Louis is an urban city, and not every development is appropriate for the City.

  8. Specific guidelines are established for urban design and developers who want to develop in the City limits should be forced to follow them.

  9. I see cops patrolling my streets more often.

  10. I see a reduction in crime.

  11. Street lights in the City are synchronized a bit better.

  12. More people get their news from independent resources and the Post-Dispatch is forced to cover local events accurately and more in-depth.

  13. The leasing agent for Southtown Centre is either fired or replaced and some quality stores actually open up and Kingshighway and Chippewa. In fact, just blow the whole thing up and start over again.

  14. Even more shops open up along Macklind Ave. in Southampton.

  15. The positive stories about the City make it into the press.

  16. My block has a party.

  17. I move a bit north and a bit east.

  18. I get to the park more often.

  19. I join a gym & lose 10-20 pounds.

  20. I make it to NYC.

  21. I get a new job.

  22. I hope my puppy starts to settle down this year.

  23. I get up on time so I can start taking the metrolink to work more often.

  24. I discover something about the City I didn't know.

  25. I have an experience in the City I've never had.

Focus less attention focused on Downtown development, more focus on neighborhoods.

Interest continues to build in City living.

Marketing efforts for City neighborhoods begin in earnest with a regional and national target audience.

Downtown has a loud, talented, and active contingent of enthusiastic residents who miss few opportunities to promote their neighborhood -- locally and nationally. That's one reason you see so much more about them than about many other neighborhoods.

Want some lessons in successful non-downtown neighborhood marketing? Watch what the FPSE and ONSL folks are doing. Talk about promotion!

The reality? There's many more city building permits being sought for new construction and substantial rehab in neighborhoods other than downtown. More articulate boosters downtown, though.
