$14,000?!?! Wow! I love to look at the houses just of Grand while I'm driving...the ones right across the street from the park. They're all so beautiful, and the amenities that you're so close to...I think i'd love it up there
It's kind of weird that we didn't buy into TGE because I've rented various apartments there for years, and have several friends who live in the 'hood. TBE has a really active neighborhood association and I love the variety of sizes in housing stock.
We bought 2 years ago in Tower Grove Heights because we wanted to be closer to Grand. We ended up between Grand and Spring in a 3 story Victorian with all the huge stuff (tuckpointing, ac/heating/plumbing) done for just over $200,000. The interior is liveable but really really ugly. That's what made it cheap for the area.
We're an easy walk from the library, post office, dry cleaners, grocery, everything!

We've lived in TGE for over 4 years now and love it here. Yeah, things may "diminish" as you go east, but those areas are rapidly disappearing as rehabbers continue to push east. We were once on a fairly sketchy block but now are surrounded by great rehabs and honetly have always been surrounded by great neighbors, some of whom have lived here for decades. The proximity to South Grand, the park and downtown made it a perfect choice for us.

.....and yes you can blame the banks as well as the government for basically helping destroy most city cores. They basically encouraged sprawl with their loan policies thus causing the current state of many of our neighborhoods.

I bought my large beautiful house, just off Grand, in 1968 for less than $14,000. There was not a bank in the city that would lend me the money, FHA agent told me I was throwing my money away!! I loved it here then and I love it even more now. The park was and is awesome. We walk to library, book store, restaurents, live music. And then there are the festivals...all a lot of fun. The closer to Grand the better. Things diminish as you go east. Tower Grove Heights, west of Grand is great also but the deals are east.
