Perfectly Centered, Remarkably Connected 6.16.2007 | 5 Comment(s)
One of the most well positioned neighborhoods in the City is the >Southwest Garden neighborhood in south St. Louis. Straddling Kingshighway and next door a few of the things that make south city a great place to live (i.e. Tower Grove Park, the Botanical Garden, etc. etc.) Southwest Garden is close to major highways and is a really well connected 'hood.

3 years ago (I can't belive it's been 3 years already) when I was searching for a home, Southwest Garden was one of the neighborhoods I'd targeted as a potential place to live. I did look at a house on Odell, unfortunately the house wasn't meant for me. However, the home had a wonderful view of the crazy hospital. It was really spectacular actually and that view would've been a something nice to look at every day.

The older homes vary in size and detail. There are some gorgeous and stately old homes near Kingshighway as well as some multi-family flats. Newer construction in the neighborhood is mostly suburban in style, but overall I think the neighborhood has done a good job at staying true to its roots.

I must live near that house on Odell...I can see the hospital AND the arch from my porch! Sublette and Arsenal is supposed to be the highest point in the city, I hear. I love it, so much within walking distance and great neighbors too.

I take issue with your use of the term "crazy hospital". Mentally ill people suffer enough. Adding to their stigma is not helpful. It hurts.

While I can appreciate your point, my blog isn't PC and probably never will be.

I stumbled upon this blog some time ago (can't remember how) and have periodically visited and enjoyed some posts, but I, like another reader, was stunned by your flippant reference to "the crazy hospital." Coincidentally, I'm in the middle of research into what it is and once was like for people living in mental hospitals, and this isn't just "not PC," as you imply--it's offensive, insensitive, hurtful, and unnecessary. I find this remark (and your seeming defense of it and indifference) about as offensive and unacceptable as some straight homophobe derogatorily referring to me or my friends as "dyke" or "fag." You are offended by people's critical or stereotypical comments about the city and about living in the city, but you find this kind of remark acceptable? Perhaps it isn't my place to criticize, but I find that ironic and unfortunate.

I'm a pretty ironic person. I'm a hypocrite too...but we all have our faults.
