So I know not everyone has the same opinion as I do as to what should happen with the Gateway Mall, but I got so mad during a conversation with someone this afternoon I just had to stop the conversation and walk away from it.
So anyway, I said we should build on it, my companion said we shouldn't and that if anything downtown needs the green space. Then he said the Gateway Mall is a failure because it is just a large median right now (which I agree with) and that Chestnut should be closed and incorporated into the Gateway Mall.
"Do you think downtown has the density to support the Gateway Mall?" I asked.
"During the day it does," was my co-workers reply.
All the buildings that were torn down to create the mall were brushed off.
"They'd be empty and dilapidated now anyway."
"But don't you think at this time and place, in this market, those buildings could be saved?"
"No, look at the real estate market, it's in the toilet."
Like that was an excuse. Then he went on to suggest that downtown needed
more parking. I almost vomited, fainted, got up, vomited again and blew up my head. We have a parking garage on almost every corner in downtown St. Louis.
If we can't recognize failure in this City we're lost.
