St. Louis, because of its rich architecture, is truly a city best seen on foot and close up. From a distance, however, our skyline is lacking. From a purely aesthetic standpoint, the St. Louis skyline benefits from the Arch's presence. Without the Arch our skyline borders on dull. The newer and taller buildings that create most of the STL skyline lack the architectural interest and density to make an interesting skyline without the Arch.

However, with the Arch, our skyline instantly propels up the top of my list of favorites. The way the buildings north and south of the Arch frame it, the asymmetrical line from north to south, I love it.
Wonder what it would look like with some more buildings.

Hm, interesting.
The Arch has done hard work for our skyline for the past 40 or so years. It's time to design with imagination and adventure so the burden is taken off of the Arch's back...or, uh, legs, so St. Louis can be know as a city where all can find great architecture both old and new.

Can you photoshop 40 city blocks of historic buildings back on the riverfront?
