I Miss The 90s 8.25.2007 | 8 Comment(s)
Yesterday afternoon I was pursuing the selection of songs a co-worker had available via his networked iTunes and I ran across "Found Out About You" by the Gin Blossoms. I'm totally addicted to this song now. Super embarrassing for me? Don't know, don't care, the opening guitar is absolutely fantastic & addictive!

My musical catalog in the 90s was limited to put it mildly. I was pretty much a one artist guy from 1988-2000, so I pretty much missed out on everything that happened musically in the 90s. I basically grew up listening to one artist exclusively and that blows my mind...to have my most formative years musically defined by one person. Not sure I'm happy about that.

Anyway, it took a new century and a year of guitar lessons to dust out the cobwebs that were firmly entrenched in my ears, but finally I was able to appreciate all the wonderful musical experiences that were to be had around me.

Now it seems that most of the music I'm interested in comes from the 90s or today's lessor known artists. It may not be for everyone, but I love hearing those songs that sound familiar, but never fully appreciated when they first came out. A lot of those songs are really well structured and have nice lyrics to boot, unlike the music of today.

I have to admit, I haven't listened to the radio in at least 10 years. I absolutely hate what the kids are listening to today, it's so unimaginative & formula and yet people gobble it up like super sweet candy. These days I rely on pure luck to find those undiscovered artists who are the saviors of modern music who nobody knows.

I am always open to suggestions, so if there's someone you think I should know about don't hesitate to let me know. My musical tastes vary widely, but mostly I like introspective, singer, songwriter & guitar stuff...although I like some good electronica with a good beat too. I love a good classical guitar and beautiful melodies and lyrics...did I just describe every music fan out there?

I actually have a few songs by him, but need to get more. I wrote a post about him a while back when I discovered him but I don't feel like looking for it.

He was on Channel 9 last night in concert but I only caught the last 2 songs. He has a great voice.

Thanks for the suggestion, a good one for sure

Mike,

Thank you! I still have that other collection you made me a while back and it still gets regular play on my iPod. I'm glad you threw Andrew Bird in there, he's one of my new favorites...I downloaded Imitosis a few weeks ago and it's a favorite...he's got great lyrics.

Amy,
Imogen Heap is great. I saw her last year at the Pageant and she was really awesome, hope you had a chance to catch her as well.

The obvious ones have already come up. But, what about the 2006 release from Lilys: "Everything Wrong Is Imaginary"? I thought that one of the most underrated from last year. Do you have any below the radar calls from 2007?
